Why Intentions Matter

It's the middle of February. For me, after the slow month of January, the year seems to start going by so quickly.  Are you still in hot pursuit of your goals? Are you beginning to cross items off your bucket list? If the initial hype of making new years resolutions and creating bucket lists is wearing off or you haven't written down any goals in a while, here are four reasons why you need to. Here are four reasons why you need to be intentional about your life.

1. You will stop giving in to excuses. You will stop blaming your circumstances, others, society and the government for that issue or problem. Think of the last time you gave an excuse, or the one area where you're still giving excuses and placing blame. Could it be you have not been intentional in that area?

2. You will actually get something done. You will actually accomplish something. You will become better. You will finally get results. What you write down has a way of making you accountable and helps you take action.

3. You will become aware of opportunities and they will stop passing you by. Once you are intentional about something, the resources to get it done will start showing up. Not because they weren't there before but because you are now aware.

4. You actually get to fix a problem before it happens. You become more proactive. You will stop living in reactive mode.

I challenge you to be intentional about your life, business, relationships, spiritual life, career, family....whatever you value, and see what a difference it makes. I am sure you want to grow, reach your God given potential, and ultimately become significant and be of value to the world. That is what success is all about. But you have to start by being intentional.

Black and Random

Wearing all black and trying to stay warm; turtle neck, hat and all....okay, I took the hat off because it was giving me a head ache. I'm doing a Random Wednesday Post today.

1. I am still working hard to build The Growth Studio. That's why I'm not posting much.

2. I've been networking quite a bit and meeting so many lovely people, getting more ideas and learning so many new things. I wish I had done this while I had my full time job. Whether you are in a job or own a business, I encourage you to join one or two networking groups. It will grow you beyond where you are.

3. I've been thinking about my 2014 Bucket List, crossing things off and I'm getting ready to work on my 2015 bucket list. I'm also waiting for my new planner. I went with Erin Condren last year but unfortunately or fortunately, I'm doing the Passion Planner this year because my schedule and work is so different now. I thought I was going to stay with Erin Condren forever. I'm still going to use their notebooks though and I love their stickers.

4. At a networking meeting yesterday, we were asked to describe what kind of Christmas ornament we would be and why. It was amazing what all the other ladies shared. I picked Christmas lights. I want to be an example, an inspiration, a testimony of God's goodness and be able to let people know that they can be the best they can be and achieve their greatest potential. I actually wrote it down because I never really thought about that.

So what have you been up to?

The Truth is not in the Appearance of Things

personal development, growth

Just a little motivation for you this Monday.

We cannot continue to trust in and believe in what is currently happening or what is the reality and settle.

Let your dreams rise above your excuses. Let your goals compel you to keep moving. Keep working on the things that will get you closer to your goal.

At a Bloggy Boot Camp conference I attended this weekend, we were asked: "What is your end game?" I ask you the same thing. We need to work from the end to the the present. Think of your end game (your dream) and work towards it.  Let go of anything that is not moving you towards your goal. When you have this mindset, decision making will be easier. You begin to say no to things that don't matter and you begin to recognize opportunities that matter.

So what do you think? Do you have a dream, goal, something you are working towards? Does it seem impossible? Do you feel you've been acting based on the current reality? What would things be like if you began to think differently?

Your current logic and beliefs are creating the results you are currently getting - Paul Martinelli

Blue Circles

Every weekend in July has been a party weekend. Birthday parties here and there. I wore this to a 60th birthday party on Saturday, a change up from the african attire I wore the week before (posted last week here). The skirt is a New York and Company find. I try to keep myself from that store because they always have something I want. Luckily they don't have their stores everywhere and I don't enjoy shopping their online store, so that saves me.

I need to get back to resting mode because too much going on I tell ya. My brain is on accelerated mode and my body is beginning to be affected. So this week, I'm trying to rest as much as I can when I can.

What I'm learning in the past few days is to be patient and whatever I'm frustrated with and any kind of progress I think I'm not making is just God's way of making me stronger and to prepare me better for what is to come. This is a little contradictory to what I posted earlier this week but the key is balance. Never go to the extremes. Never over do it. You can slow down and wait and listen sometimes so that you clearly know what to do next.

Have a great rest of the week.

What are you Waiting For?

How to step out and reach your goals

This was the bible verse that popped into my mind this morning. I meditated on it a few minutes and was reminded of the following road blocks that keep people from moving forward, starting a venture or going for their dreams. Some are still roadblocks and excuses that I make.

  • Are you still waiting for the time to be right?
  • Are you still waiting for your feelings to be right?
  • Are you still waiting for the other person to make the first move or apologize?
  • Are you still waiting for those involved to get their act together and behave?
  • Are you still waiting for the economy to get better?

But you may say I've never done that before. There's a first time for everything. Go as far as you can see. When you get there, you'll see farther (Zig Ziglar). Take the first steps. When you do, the next thing you're supposed to do will become clearer.

As I've been building my business, a lot of things I know now and I'm doing now, I never knew or could do before. I'm discovering new things and my level of awareness has increased. If I had waited to know all those things in the beginning, I would have been in the same spot still. When the opportunity you are looking for finally comes, it may be too late to prepare but when you prepare and step out, then you will actually recognize opportunities and be able to seize them and move closer to your goals.

I thought I didn't have the money to invest in my business but once I took the first step and had a goal, my spending habits changed. I stopped buying shoes and invested in my business instead. So, changing your mindset and having a greater purpose will help you find the resources which you thought you never had.

Will there be problems along the way? Yes, but instead of letting the problems paralyze you, work on them, solve them, think of ways you can overcome them (the answer is within you by the way) and move on and reach those goals.

You don't have to be great to start but you have to start to be great. - Zig Ziglar.

So what are you waiting for? What do you need to start today?

Summer Reading for the Small Business Owner

I'm joining my kids and making a summer reading list for myself. I must admit that my kids read more than I do. My daughter once accused me of not seeing me with a book. I do read occasionally and listen to books but not as much as I should so I'm getting back on track starting now.

Here's what on my list for growing my life, my businesses and my blog.  Developing yourself by learning takes you further in life and grows your business. I am currently reading no. 4. for business and No. 1 at the same time. Let me tell you, #Girlboss is the book to read. It's such an easy read if you can get past some of the swearing (don't know why swearing is creeping into the business world these days) and you will learn a lot.

If you have read the book or plan to read it, and if you are serious about growing your business, I will be facilitating a virtual mastermind group on the key learning points in the book and we will discuss, rub minds together and hold ourselves accountable on implementing them. It will be short and sweet. Please sign up here if you are interested and I will send you more details.

You will notice that there is no fiction listed. I wish I could add one but I honestly don't have time to read fiction right now.

mastermind group, #girlboss, grow your small business, self development, personal development, blogging book

1. The #GIRLBOSS
2. Make Every Day a Friday: How to Be Happier 7 Days a Week
3. Think and Grow Rich
4. The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth: Live Them and Reach Your Potential
5. Fashion 2.0: Blogging Your Way to The Front Row

Apart from the books listed here, I have so many others I bought years ago but never read or read only half way. I know why...I did not really have a why then, I didn't have a reason, I didn't really have a purpose for reading them, even though I was big on personal development then. My purpose has been renewed and better realized now and I tell you, I've been learning in a lot of ways, including jumping into these books the past few weeks. So, if you don't really have a why or have not come to the realization that you really need to grow, why you need to go grow and improve to be successful, these books or anyone for that matter may not be of interest to you.

What's on your summer reading list?

Friday Fives: Creativity, Lovely Quotes and Love

Happy Friday and Happy love day! Here are five things that got me smiling, thinking and growing this week.

1. I'm still reading this book How Successful People Think: Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life (I should be done by now) and I love the thoughts on creativity. I've never seen myself as a creative thinker and never thought I could learn to be creative. I thought people were just born to be creative. There are so many points which warrant a seperate post but here are a few phrases listed that kill creative thinking: I'm not a creative person, Follow the rules, Don't ask questions, Be practical, We've never done it this way before, It didn't work for them, We don't have time, We don't have the money etc. How many ideas have you killed because of these phrases?

"A new idea is delicate, it can be killed by a sneer or a yawn; it can be stabbed to death by a quip and worried to death by a frown. Negative environments kill thousands of great ideas every minute"

2. Whenever I take a break at work to work on Avon or this blog, I keep telling myself: "I wish I could do this all day" and then I found this quote on Instagram this week. This is one sure way to determine what you need to be doing.

 3. I just discovered Instaquote this week. I've always wondered where all the beautiful and graphic quotes that I see on Facebook came from. Here's one I created on true love. This was how I made sure that I loved my husband (and not just lusting after him) before marrying him. The bible has everything you need for life doesn't it?

4. Here is a screen shot of tweets this week from my other Twitter account. Building the Growth Studio slowly but surely.

5. Also in honor of Valentine's day, enjoy this video. How come I never heard of this guy before?

Planning for Success with a Paper Planner

I've been a paper planner user for many many years and I've always used Franklin Covey planners. This year I wanted to try something new and purchased the Erin Condren Life Planner

Now, a planner is not just for entering appointments. That's what your smart phone is for. It is for planning and staying organized. If you have dreams, if you have goals, if you have a desire or if you have a bucket list, I suggest getting a planner to help you reach those goals. I wanted to share how I plan for success and stay organized using the Erin Condren planner. (By the way, this post is not sponsored)

1. Here is the customized front cover. I also put the name of the new venture I'm working on as a reminder to keep working on it. Launching and growing The Growth Studio is my ultimate goal and vision for the year. By the way, I went with Erin Condren this year because I wanted something pretty.

How to use a planner

2. This section of the planner is for writing down birthdays and anniversaries for every month. I basically remember everyone's birthday, and then there's Facebook to remind you so I use this section to keep record of my face to face Avon customers orders and payments. It is easier to write this down rather than enter it electronically somewhere. I also have a little section to list monthly expenses. Not all planners will work perfectly to suit every need so here, I customized this section accordingly.

Recording customer payments

3. I taped my 2014 bucket list on the last page of the January weekly calendar (January was almost over before I got my planner so I don't need that page any longer). It is important to have your bucket list, yearly goal or dreams front and center. It is the first thing I see when I open my planner, it is also easy to refer to because you know it is in one of the first pages. Refer to this from time to time to remind you. Here's a bible passage I love dearly "Write the vision and make it plain so that others may read it and run..."(Habakuk 2:2). If your vision is not in plain view, you may not be able to run with it (take action).
How to set goals and achieve them

4. There's a little section on the right hand side of the monhly calendar pages  for notes. On the top part I will be writing my prasie reports and what I accomplished each month and on the bottom part will be goals for the month. This will be high level goals which I get from looking at my bucket list. What would I have to do this month to get me closer to the items on my bucket list? That is what I put down for goals...See how planner is not just for appointments?

5. And then on the weekly planning pages is where I enter all my weekly activities, appointments, games, blog post topics, planned outfits, bible reading etc. I love the weekly layout because you get to see your whole week as a whole. On the left hand is a section for Weekly goals and notes. This is where I write what I want to do or have to do for the week and doesn't have to be done on a specific day or time and also where I further break down what I wrote down for my monthly goal. The planner also comes with stickers which can be customized and some are already preprinted with activities like appointments, mani/pedi  (I know I don't have time for that), Game day, and so on. The bottom section is for meal planning and the bottom left section is for my shopping lsit. The shopping list is created based on the meals planned or I just list whatever we need for that week.

Weekly planning, How to plan for the week, how to achieve your goals

5. There is a section for notes at the back end of the planner. This is where I write down notes, thoughts, blog post ideas, scriptures etc. Unfortunately the notes section of this planner will not go with me into the next year. That's one down side. I also don't have a good system yet to organize all my notes in one place. There are some on the ipad, some on the phone, they're everywhere.

6. The planner also has a back pocket and pouch. I keep post cards, envelopes, business cards, etc for my Avon business in the pouch so I can easily use them while I'm on the go. The Target gift card peeking out of the pocket is for a customer who recently placed an online order. (You've seen my current Avon special right?). The pouch is for miscellaneous items such as stamps, little papers, paper clips, etc.

So that's how I plan for success and stay organized, although I'm not perfectly organized.  Let me hear your thoughts on paper planning.

I Hired a Cleaning Lady: Tip for Success

Growing your business while outsourcing lesser jobs
I mentioned on Twitter last year in a conversation that one of the things I was going to do in 2014 is source out cleaning. Well I did find a cleaning lady and twice already this year I've used her service. I did this because I have so much on my plate. If you follow this blog, you will see everything I involve myself with. I decided to source out cleaning so I can have more time to do other things. The first day she came, I actually spent time cleaning along with her. The second time, I spent the entire time she was cleaning working on creating a brochure for my business (time well spent).
Some may frown on this but if you are about something and going somewhere, you gotta do what you gotta do. I have so much I want to do but I still want a clean house while pursuing my goals.

I went to an Avon seminar late last year and one of the tips given was that you should put a dollar amount on the work you do, say $25 per hr or $100 per hr or whatever. Do you want to pay $50 an hr for cleaning? Spend that hour doing work on your business and pay $20/hr ( a lesser amount) to someone else to do the cleaning, stamp letters, answer the phones and so on. I thought I didn't have the money to pay someone else to do stuff for me but I then remembered how much I spend on shoes and clothes and eating out. I wrote a note to self: Stop buying all these stuff and move your business forward.

Sometimes as women, we use our kids and the work we have to do at home as an excuse to not go for what we really want. I've missed out on so many opportunities, even quality time with my husband because of this. So that's what I'm doing. I have big dreams for this year and it's going to require taking some non conventional steps.... so next stop: hire an assistant!

And this is so true. Anyone else do this? I remember trying to rush home from work so that I could tidy things up before the cleaning lady got to my house.

Burgundy Skirt Remix

This is a dress down version of the burgundy skirt I featured two weeks ago. It was a relatively warm day so I decided to wear a skirt. I added interest to the outfit by wearing colored tights. These ones from Target are not bad at all. They passed the no itch test. I wore them all day with no problems.  To ease into the colored tights trend, wear them with boots to hide most of it. I did go bold with cobalt ones last year.  I'm probably too old to do that again now.

I do not believe January is almost over. I hope all the goals you wrote down are being worked on. I've accomplished quite a few things this month. My new planner came in this week and I will be using it to help me stay on track with everything - my blog, business, spiritual growth, family, meal planning and so on. I hope to share more of how I will be using it. Yes I love paper planning and this year I decided to go pretty by going with the Erin Condren Planner.
